Translations

El Rey (The King)

I do know that I am out of your life
But on the day that I die
I know you will cry and cry

You´ll say that you did not love me
But you are going to be very sad
And you´re going to stay that way

With or without money
I always do what I want
And my word is the law
I have neither a throne nor a queen
Nor anyone who understands me
But I continue to be the king

A stone on the road
Showed me that my destiny
Was to roll and roll

Then a muleteer told me
That you don’t have to arrive first
But you do have to know how to arrive

México en la Piel (Mexico on your Skin)

Like the view in Sonora
Dressed with the sea in Cozumel
With the sun’s warmth on your whole body
That´s the feeling you get from Mexico

Like the good tequila from this land
Or like a friend from Yucatan
And embroidered in Aguascalientes
Or woven like wool in Teotitlan

Chorus: That´s how Mexico feels
Like lips on your skin
That’s how Mexico captivates you
That´s how Mexico tastes to you
That’s the feeling you get from Mexico

Like seeing the mountains of Chihuahua
Or the arts and crafts of San Miguel
Getting into a saddle
That’s the feeling you get from Mexico

Like listening to mariachis
And make you cry to that song
In the south they play marimbas
And in the north accordians

Like a good Sarape from Saltillo
Like a welcome in Veracruz
With the emotion of a kiss face to face
That’s the feeling you get from Mexico.

Like contemplating the Caribbean Sea
Or discovering a beautiful sunrise
Feeling a fresh breeze in Morelia
The moon caressing a woman

Contigo Aprendí (With You I Learned)

With you I learned that there are new and better emotions
With you I found a new world of dreams
I discovered that a week has more than seven days
To make my joys even more joyous
And to be happy. I learned that with you.

With you I learned to see the light on the other side of the moon
I learned that I don’t try to change you one bit
I discovered that a kiss can be the sweetest and most profound
That I could even leave this world tomorrow
With all the good things I have experienced with you
And I also learned that I was born the day I met you

Piel Morena (Brown Skin)

It’s the magic of your body or the perfume of your breath
It’s the fire of your bonfire that keeps me as a prisoner
It’s the sweet poison of your enchantment or the flame that keeps burning me
The honey of your tenderness is the reason for my insanity

I’m nothing without the light of your gaze
Without the echoes of your laughter that sneak through my window.
You are the owner of the warmth of my pillow
Of my nostalgic nights
Of my dreams and hopes

You are the brown skin
Song of passion and sand
You are the brown skin
A night under the starlight
You are the brown skin,…
Beach, sun and palm trees
You are the brown skin
The dream of my springtime

Your kisses are the sweet fruit that inebriates me
That carries away my sadness makes me end up feeling calm
Prisioner of your love at dawn
Of your kisses and caresses that rest deep in my soul

Brown skin, you are cumbia, sun and sand
Brown skin, my delirium, my condemnation
It’s the magic of your body or the perfume of your breath
It’s the fire of your bonfire that keeps me prisoner
Ay caramba!

You are brown skin
Because I’m happy only by your side
You are brown skin
I have so many things for you
You are brown skin
Consuming me in your bonfire slowly
You are brown skin
You keep me prisoner

La Niña Fresa (The Princess)

This song goes out to all the girls
Who are like a girl I know

I have a girlfriend who is very sweet
And naughty but she has a flaw
She’s a princess

When we go out dancing
We go with several couples
The waiter arrives and everyone chants:

Chorus: Should they serve her tepache?
No No
Would she like some beer?
No No
Should they get her some soda pop?
No No
Or an ice-cream surprise?
No No
What does the baby girl want?
What will the princess order?
What is the queen craving?
What does the princess want?

Ugh. A banana split, OK?

What did I tell you?
She is very loving
she caresses and kisses me
but she can’t help being a princess
Where is the waiter?
Get him to the table
Since there were no bananas
Let’s see what the princess wants

(Chorus)

Ok, an ice-cream at least, no?
Ugh! How I hate these places

(Chorus)

A tepache?

Tepache for me? What’s wrong with you?! Nuh-uh!
And let it be noted that I don’t even want to make a scene, ok?

Secreto de Amor (Secret Love)

I will change your name
To keep it secret
Because I love you, and you love me
And to someone we owe respect

I will change your name
Based on what you have brought
Now your name is Gloria (Glory)
And you certainly deserve it

And we have to kiss
Cuddling under the moon
Secret love I must confess
I love you like no one else

And I can change your name
But not the story
Whatever your name
For me, you are the Glory

You are a secret love

In front of everyone do not stare at me
Do not sigh; do not call out to me
Even though you love me
In front of everybody
I am your friend
I am telling you, what a punishment

Todos Me Miran (Everyone Keeps Looking at Me)

You made me feel that I was worthless
And my tears fell down at your feet
I would look into the mirror without finding myself
I was only what you wanted to see

So I let my hair down, and dressed up as a queen
I put on heels and make up, and I was beautiful
I walked to the door, and I heard you yell at me
But your chains can no longer stop me
And I looked up at the night sky, but it was no longer dark
It was full of sequins!

And everyone keeps looking at me
And I know that I am beautiful because everyone is admiring me
And everyone keeps looking at me
Because I do what few people dare to do
And everyone keeps looking at me,
some with envy, but in the end after all,
everyone will love me

(Encore) Popurrí en Español (Potpourri in Spanish)

When I woke up and I saw another man lying next to me
I asked myself, “This jerk? Who is he?”
And later I rationalized that it must have been the alcohol
I must have mixed so much yesterday that I went fag.
And what will they say about me? (They will say that you are gay)
I will have to assume it. (Don’t hurry stud)
They will accept me as such. (As if)
Stereosexual
———
Girls today with cold shoulders
Girls today, we can do it
——
Shadow here, shadow there, put on makeup
A crystal mirror, and look at yourself
———
There was a party that night and he showed up in a tuxedo
And I bit my lips, how cool
Shy
A while later, we danced, touching darkness
I think you have bewitched me
We go to the port to swim
Shy

The moon over the sea surprised us
Just one kiss and it was deadly
And turned into a statue of salt
Look for me shyly
Come have a drink in the sea
Dare shyly
How long can we stay
Look at me shyly
I know you are beginning to like me
Shyly stay
I’m not going to run away
Shy you
——
Emotion after emotion, I swear to you that for today
The streets are the best school
Motorcycles, boys, fun, the best of the best
All whenever you want within reach
Cars, fashion and rock and roll
Our civilization, lights, rhythm and fun
——
Stick, nice stick
———
Banana hard, tight, perverse, mischievous, small, tasty

Tony, pretty face, spool face and Martha, pretty face, spool face
My spool, Yolanda, spool face
And I have a bouncing ball that lifts me up and down. The ball bounces up.

I’m in love” (estoy enamorada).

Artista Compositor Arreglo Rock Alternativo Solista
Gloria Gaynor Freddie Perren, Dino Fekaris Cake Dean McIntyre

I’m In Love With A Wonderful Guy
from the musical South Pacific

Writer Composer TTB Arrangement Style
Oscar Hammerstein II Richard Rodgers Alfonso López Show Tune
Rodgers and Hammerstein were as inspired by Mary Martin’s personality (the original Nellie Forbush) as they were by the character of Nellie to write this song. They introduced it to Mary Martin one night when they were fine-tuning the script. Mary Martin was so thrilled that when she sang it on stage, she performed cartwheels on the stage at every turn of “I’m in love.”

If You Were Gay
from the musical Avenue Q

Music and Lyrics TTBB Arrangement Style
Robert López & Jeff Marx Alfonso López, based on the arrangement for The Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus Show Tune
Avenue Q is an “autobiographical and biographical” coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. The musical is notable for the use of puppets. Robert López (composer) is the youngest of only twelve people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award, and the only person to while all four within a decade. He is also known for writing the songs for the Disney film, Frozen.

Gestalt Prayer

Writer Choral Poetry adaptation for PVMC Performers
Based on the statement by Fritz Perls Alfonso López Shooting Stars Ensemble
The “Gestalt prayer” is a 56-word statement that is taken as a classic expression of Gestalt therapy as way of life model of which Dr. Perls was a founder. The key idea of the statement is the focus on living in response to one’s own needs, without projecting onto or taking introjects from others. It also expresses the idea that it is by fulfilling their own needs that people can help others do the same and create space for genuine contact; that is, when they “find each other, it’s beautiful.”

I Will Survive

Artist Composer Alternative-Rock Cover Arrangement Soloist
Gloria Gaynor Freddie Perren, Dino Fekaris Cake Dean McIntyre
The American alternative rock band, Cake, covered the song rock-style in 1996, on their album Fashion Nugget. In addition to many subtle changes, lead singer John McCrea altered the lyrics. Gaynor does not like this version, due to its use of profanity.

¿A Quién Le Importa?

Artist Composer Style
Alaska y Dinarama Carlos García Berlanga, Ignacio Canut Hi-NRG
Alaska y Dinarama’s version of the song has been recognized as a gay anthem by the Spanish language-speaking LGBT community, even though it does not allude to it at all.The song describes a person who is criticized for being different. In 2002, Mexican pop singer Thalia engendered a very successful cover and hit single of the song. Alaska (now part of Fangoria along with Nacho Canut, her bandmate from Dinarama) re-sang the song in 2010. Fangoria released the single in 2011, as well as the newly engendered music video.

Encore:  Todos Me Miran

Artist Composer TBB Vocal Arrangement Choreography Style
Gloria Trevi Gloria Treviño Alfonso López Alfonso López Disco, Electropop
This song has become a club anthem that confirmed Trevi’s status as a gay icon. The song, as interpreted in the music video, is about a young man who dares to crossdress in spite of society’s opinions.

Thank you for supporting the 3rd DE COLORES gala fundraiser

On behalf of the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus, we thank everyone who supported our 3rd DE COLORES gala fundraiser! The event reached more folks than ever and your generous gift of an auction donation or purchase of an auction item or fundraiser ticket helped make this the Chorus’s most successful fundraising event in its history.

With your help, we raised the funds needed to continue to fulfill PVMC’s mission of spreading a message of understanding and love to our diverse community. You helped fund overhead, season concert performances and appearances at charitable and community events across the region.

As a result of this event’s financial results, we are proud to announce the establishment of a PVMC “Scholarship and Outreach Fund”. This fund will help make participation in the Chorus and its events more readily available to individuals regardless of their personal financial circumstances. In fact, beginning with DE COLORES 2015 itself, we were able to provide assistance as needed so that every active singer that wished to do so could attend and perform as well as our valued and hardworking active volunteers. Equally importantly, the fund will also help us to occasionally provide free concerts outside of our traditional central Vallarta environs as part of our outreach.

On behalf of the DE COLORES 2015 Committee and our entire Board and Chorus family, thank you for your generous support of the PVMC and for your hand in making this year’s DE COLORES a smashing success!

We hope to see you at our next concert, which will be held on during Pride Week at Act II Stages. Watch our website for more information on tickets, dates and times, and see you at the concert!

A new Artistic Director, un nuevo Director Artístico

Órale! A New Artistic Director!

Wow! A new look. A new sound. A strong, vibrant community bringing compelling musical shows to add to Puerto Vallarta’s growing entertainment repertoire. With this vision, Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus is proud to present our new artistic director, Alfonso López.

With an extensive musical background, Alfonso enthusiastically joins the Chorus with both vision and experience. A graduate of The University of Texas-Pan American with a Master’s in Vocal Performance (Summa Cum Laude – with highest honors), he went on to become a music professor at UTPA. He told PVMC president, Richard Canter, “I had the delight of being the Musical Director and Choir Conductor for the staged musicals both in the Theatre and Music Departments.” This multi-talented bass-baritone has sung in operas, acted on stage, conducted youth choirs, taught vocal lessons; and was the musical director, vocal director, and arranger for the talented live band at Opera Teatro Bar in Texas, where they perform music from Opera to International Popular Music. El Señor López has more than 80 shows under his musical belt.

What is his vision for the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus? “To be known throughout México,” he states with a soft smile, but he is serious and has a plan for achieving his goal.

Is that all?  “No, there’s more; I want to create excitement in our audience and our singers. I’m not supposed to,” again his quiet smile, “but I love looking at the audience to see if they are enjoying the show as much as the performers are enjoying presenting it.”

He understands why PVMC sings. It’s just to provide entertainment, right? “No, again, it’s more than that; the mission, the reason for the Chorus’ existence, is to help gay people gain acceptance from their family, friends, and colleagues. When people attend PVMC performances, they will observe joyful gay men, singing together. Perhaps some will alter their vision, or perhaps some will begin to understand that we are all human, and simply another part of the world community.”

As PVMC welcomes Alfonso López, the Chorus would like to recognize the contribution of their retiring artistic director, Bob Bruneau. “One of my proudest accomplishments has been to co-found the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus with my longtime friend, Joyce Ericson,” Bob says.  “Our goal was to create a bilingual, cross-cultural chorus. And now the climate is right for an artistic director fluent in Spanish and English, so I have moved aside to allow this to happen.  I love our chorus, and will be singing and supporting them whenever I can.”

PVMC shares the excitement of both Bob and Alfonso and looks forward to a season of growth, opportunity, and fabulous, fun music.

Híjole! Wow! How can someone join the Chorus? “We are a gay men’s chorus,” says Alfonso, “so you would need to be male, and gay or gay-friendly. PVMC will be auditioning new singers beginning with our July rehearsals so check our website, www.pvmenschorus.org. We also welcome volunteers of any gender.”

Join the PVMC community, contribute to the vision and be part of the audience as we present our next exciting performance!

¡Órale! ¡Un Nuevo Director Artístico!

¡Wow!

Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus Newsletter, Vol.1, No.1 – January 2014

(Para español, vea abajo.)

Welcome to our first newsletter for everyone in the PVMC family! This is part of our New Year’s resolution to maintain regular communication with you. Please send any comments and suggestions for future issues to info@pvmenschorus.org.

The first half of the 2013-14 season was very busy with our first “Dine-Out” event, two free live concerts at Los Arcos on the Malecón and our second annual holiday concert in Teatro Vallarta. We also became an official not-for-profit organization in Mexico, Bahía de Banderas Artes Enscenicas, AC, (Banderas Bay Performing Arts).

We are looking forward to the rest of the season and hope you will continue to be a part of our musical life.  In this edition, we invite you to read more about:

·         Our exciting new film project, “Every Song Has a Voice,” documenting the formation of the PVMC

·         “Audience Appreciation” concerts – more chances for you to hear us, conveniently and in person!

·         Second Annual Gala Dinner, Dance and Auction, “De Colores,” Garza Blanca, March 29th!

·         Third Annual Gay Pride Concert with Reveille Men’s Chorus from Tucson, Arizona, in May

Every Song Has a Voice”- The Birth of a Chorus

The PVMC has begun filming a documentary on our founding as the first gay chorus in Mexico. The film follows our unique path that includes the challenges of our multi-cultural and bilingual situation.

>The following information from the film maker describes the film project in more detail, as well as how funds will be used to directly produce the film. We invite you to join us and support our effort with whatever financial assistance you see fit.

Every song has a voice, the Birth of a Chorus, is a feature documentary on the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus, the first gay men’s chorus in Mexico. The mission of the Puerto Vallarta Chorus is to present quality male choral music in Spanish and English using the voices and talent of gay Mexicans and Ex-Patriots to entertain, enlighten and unify it’s audience and members while building bridges of understanding, acceptance and love between communities, cultures, families and friends.

Award-winning filmmaker Brian Barnard’s documentary will cover the birth of the Chorus until the present.  Filming began in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in October, 2013, and will wrap in February, 2014, with a final cut of the film slated for March.  Please help us document this historical moment in Gay Mexican history.  The film is not only meant to record but to be an inspiration to those who might want to walk these steps in the future and to honor those who have helped forge this path and make it possible.

The funds will not only cover the production and post-production cost but will also fund an exciting program called Hands Across The Border,  where a Mexican national will get to travel to Canada and work with a mentor and the filmmaker on post production, gaining valuable experience to bring back to Mexico.

Audience Appreciation” Concerts

As we continue to grow musically and improve the quality of our performances, we will be performing more frequently in Puerto Vallarta, the Banderas Bay community and throughout Mexico. With so many exciting concert venues and worthwhile causes, we are increasingly looking for opportunities to fulfill our mission of building bridges through quality concerts.

This past fall we sang at the PuRR Project Bingo and gave two free concerts on the Malecón. This month, (see below), we will perform in a benefit for the Bucerías Children’s Library at Los Arroyos Verdes.

We are in conversation with other local venues and organizations for additional appearances. If you have a suggestion for a possible appearance, send us an email at info@pvmenchorus.org and we will send our application form for guest appearances. Give us as much lead time as possible so we can evaluate your request and adequately prepare.

Every Song Has a Voice”- The Birth of a Chorus (El Nacimiento de un Coro)
